- My Second Chance at Being a Student
Hello my name is Karina and I will be sharing my experience on why I decided to go back to school after working in Finance.
School has always been something that was important to me. Coming from a first generation Mexican-American background your almost expected to go to school get good grades and find a job to help your family. However, my story is a little different.
I was studying at The University of Utah and it was the end of my sophomore year and I had a language requirement that I needed to complete. As I looked through the course catalog all the language courses were full except Korean. Little did I know that by taking this single course it would change the course of my entire life.

I took the class and at the end of the semester we had a professor from the Asia Campus come and do an info session about how you can go to Korea and study at the same price that it would cost if I stayed in Utah. So I decided to apply and get as much financial aid as I could to see if it was something that was doable. However there was a small little detail, I haven’t told my mom that I had applied.
My mother is a very traditional Mexican woman, so I knew that it was going to be hard to convince her. So I made a plan that once I had everything in order I can tell her in a presentation and she would let me go.
WRONG
She automatically told me absolutely not and she even called the school to forfeit my application but thanks to FERPA she wasn’t able to do that. I talked to her for about two months until she finally caved in and she let me go.
