Soon, it’s going to be March, and that means a new semester is just around the corner! New semester, new classes, new… super expensive textbooks? If you’ve ever walked into a bookstore in Korea, checked the price tag on a major-related book, and immediately reconsidered your life choices, you’re not alone. But guess what? You don’t have to go broke buying new books!

As a computer engineering student, I rely heavily on major textbooks, and trust me, they can be pricey. A brand-new Korean version can cost up to 40,000 KRW, while English textbooks can go as high as 80,000 KRW. But don’t worry because for the past 3 years, I have figured out ways to save, and I’m here to share them with you!

Buying and selling used books is a game-changer to save money as an international student. Not only can you save tons of money, but you’re also helping the environment (hello, sustainability!).

Where to Buy Used Books

1. University Online Communities - 'Everytime'

Do you know that many universities in Korea have online student communities where book trading is common. Students identity are anonymous and hidden. So, you don't have to be shy or scared that people may know who you are. Apps like Everytime (에브리타임) have a special sections for students to buy and sell used books. Seniors who no longer need their textbooks often list them at discounted prices, and if you're lucky, they might even throw in extra notes or summaries to help you study! I do this very frequently because the book that the other students sell is very affordable and cheap ! It usually costs around 10,000 KRW :)

2. Secondhand Bookstores

If you prefer browsing books in person, Aladin 중고서점 and Yes24 중고서점 are excellent choices. These bookstores have physical locations in various cities across Korea, where you can check the book’s condition before purchasing. If you’d rather shop from home, their online platforms allow you to search for your textbook and check different price options based on the book’s condition. Some books even come with additional discounts or coupons, making them even more budget-friendly!

3. Online Marketplaces

Online marketplaces are also one of the best ways to find used books quickly and at competitive prices.

당근마켓 (Karrot Market): This local secondhand marketplace is great for finding books in your local area. Since the platform connects buyers and sellers based on location, you can meet up in person and avoid shipping fees. Just search for your textbook title and see if someone nearby is selling it! I could say there are many choices here, too !

번개장터 (Bungaejangter) & 중고나라 (Joonggonara): These platforms have a wider selection of books, especially for specialized or less common textbooks. Since they operate nationwide, you might need to negotiate shipping costs with the seller, but the variety makes it worth checking out. Also, be sure to not get scammed and choose the seller wisely.
