Writing My Way to Korea: My Personal Statement Experience
SCHOLARSHIPS

Applying to a Korean university, especially through programs like the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), requires a well-crafted personal statement. This is one of the most important parts of your application, but it can also be one of the most challenging to write. As a GKS student who successfully passed the document screening twice, I’d like to share what worked for me and how I approached my personal statements.

What to Include in Your Personal Statement:

A personal statement typically covers the following points:

  • Motivations for applying: Why do you want to join this program?
  • Family and educational background: How has your upbringing and education shaped you?
  • Significant experiences: Highlight key moments, risks, achievements, or influences that have defined your journey.
  • Extracurricular activities: Include club activities, community service, or work experiences.
  • Awards, publications, or skills: If applicable, describe these in detail.

Remember, your personal statement shouldn’t feel like a checklist. Instead, think of it as a biography that tells the story of who you are and what makes you unique.

My Personal Statement Strategies:

I applied for the GKS scholarship twice, and both times I passed the document screening. Here’s how I approached my personal statements:

First Attempt: Emotive and Reflective

I started with a meaningful phrase that defined my life and explained how it influenced my decisions and activities. This approach made my statement more emotive and engaging, rather than just listing achievements.

Second Attempt: Growth-Oriented

After not receiving the scholarship the first time, I began my statement by reflecting on how that failure helped me grow. I discussed what I learned from the process and how I improved my preparation for the second attempt. I then connected this growth to the new experiences and awards I gained during the following year.
