Sogang University will work with Seongnam to foster semiconductor and AI talent, creating the Sogang-Pangyo Digital Innovation Campus in the city.
The city signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Sogang University on Wednesday to open the tentatively named Sogang-Pangyo Digital Innovation Campus in Seongnam, Gyeonggi.
The campus will train master's and doctoral students in the system semiconductor and AI fields.
The campus will be built in the 2nd Pangyo Techno Valley cluster, in a 8,900-square-meter (95,800-square-feet) plot of land. It will open around September at the earliest.
Seongnam and Sogang University will also work on additional research and industry-academia projects in the semiconductor and AI fields.
"The MOU is a great opportunity that allows us to offer professional learning opportunities to talented students at the 'Digital Innovation Campus,'" said Sim Jong-hyeok, president of Sogang University. “We will also spare no effort to support the development of Seongnam and nearby areas."
Seongnam has been working on inviting many universities to the city, with KAIST slated to open an AI research center in Pangyo by 2027. Seongnam Mayor Shin Sang-jin also said the city is in talks with Sungkyunkwan University to host the university's research and development (R&D) center in Pangyo.
