As the new semester progresses and autumn settles in, the cool breeze and vibrant fall foliage create the perfect backdrop for Kangwon National University's 2024 Baekryeong Festival. This annual festival has allowed students together to celebrate campus life, filled with performances, food stalls, and various activities all day. I had a great time at my third KNU Festival ! So, this time I will share about it.

Fun fact: I was part of the team that built the website for the festival, serving as the UX/UI Designer. This experience not only allowed me to contribute creatively but also deepened my understanding of the intricate planning that goes into organizing such a large event.

History of Korean universities festival

Back in October 1956, the first university festival was held at Shinheung University (former name of Kyung Hee University). Following this, various universities began hosting their own festivals under names like "Hakwon-je" or "Daehak-je".

During the 1960s, university festivals mostly focused on events such as marathons, couples parties (쌍쌍파티), and May Queen selection contests. By the late 1960s, these festivals began to take on a more academic nature with conferences and presentations, featuring invited external speakers.

In the 1970s, they evolved to a more artistic and athletic elements. The queen selection and coronation ceremonies held at universities like Ewha Womans University, Sookmyung Women's University, and The Soodo Women's College of Education (the former name of Sejong University) during the 1960s and 70s which became the highlight of these festivals ! How interesting, right?
