- Teaching English while Playing? My Part-time Job Adventure at an English Kids Cafe 👧📚
Hello!
Are you interested in getting a part-time job in Korea? Are you confident in your English skills? Do you enjoy entertaining kids through fun games? Then I’ve got just the right job for you! Keep reading to find out more! 🌟
Introduction
My name is Mihaela and I’m an acting student in my final semester at Hanyang University. I’ve worked many different part-time jobs in Korea, but there is one that I enjoyed so much, it would be a shame not to share it with you, guys! And that job is… working as an English tutor at an English kids cafe! 👧👩🏫
What is an English Kids Cafe?
But what exactly is an English Kids Cafe? Well, don’t let the word “cafe” fool you because it is far from its definition. English Kids Cafes can be best described as playgrounds for children where they can learn English through various activities such as singing, dancing, crafting and interactive games but the main emphasis is on playing.

There are English Kids Cafes all around Korea but today I will introduce you to the one where I'm working at, called "Promom Kinder".
According to Promom Kinder's official website, they have 22 branches nationwide, including Hyundai Department Store, Shinsegae Department Store, Lotte Department Store.
“Promomkinder is a space where children become friends with English. Through various games, conversations, and art activities with foreign crews, they will naturally gain confidence in the English environment. It effectively helps to lay the foundation for enjoyable changes and growth in everyday life, and is positioning itself as a next-generation brand that can communicate and empathize with each other.”

Here I have attached two photos of two different branches of Promom Kinder. The playgrounds are usually quite big and they include a study room, a crafting room, a reading area, activity and playing areas.
Employees
1. Tutors: Teachers, more often referred as tutors, are the foreign employees who teach the children and play with them.
2. Staff: The “staff” members are typically Korean employees who have the task of taking pictures of the children during their playtime and sending them to the parents to keep them informed. Additionally, the staff also helps with emergencies, such as when kids get injured. Sometimes tutors might not be fluent in Korean, so the staff helps by communicating with the children in their native language.
How to apply?
Finally we arrive at one of the most important questions: How can we apply at Promom Kinder?
1. Email: First, if you go to Promom Kinder's website and click on "Recruitment", you will find this email:
eunansky@hyper-lifecare.com
But before contacting them, I advise you to search the closest branch (on Naver map) for your convenience and later in the email, you can ask if this specific branch has any open positions.
Next, the hiring team has to check if you are an eligible candidate, which is determined by whether you can provide the necessary documents.
Finally, you will be called for an interview. But don't worry! This is not actually an interview but more like a questionnaire for your availability. The manager will ask you which days and hours you're most comfortable working and then you will be informed about your tasks at work.
Documents
As I mentioned earlier, the documents are what actually determine whether you can work at Promom Kinder (or any other English Kids Cafe).
Tip! I advise you to start preparing the documents as early as possible because it does take a lot of time, unfortunately.
When I was applying for the position, the manager informed me that I had to submit these four documents:
1. Front and back of residence card 신분증 (외국인등록증) 앞, 뒤
2. Copy of bankbook 통장 사본
3. Criminal record certificate (with Apostille certification) 범죄경력증명서 (아포스티유 인증)
4. Physical examination report for employment (including drug test results) 채용신체검사서 (마약검사 결과 포함)
The document that was the most difficult to acquire was the Criminal Background Check. During the winter break, I went back to my home country and one of my objectives was to get this specific document.
First, I had to visit the court and apply for this Criminal Background Check. I waited around 3-4 days to receive it and then I had to visit the notary to get the Apostille Certification on the document. This process took 2 weeks and it was costly. However, you have to check in advance, as each country has its own system and processing timeline.
The physical examination report for employment is usually done in big hospitals in Korea. It includes:
1. Blood test
2. Urine test
