- From Heat Waves to Frost Bites : Dealing with winters
" Isn't it fun having to see all the snowflakes after all this time not experiencing it?"
As a tropical girl from Malaysia, where we have only one season which is sunny (and monsoon ! rain and rain... ). I’m no stranger to heat and humidity. It’s basically summer all year long, with temperatures hovering around 33°C and no end to the sweat. We're all about those hot, sunny days that feel like a warm hug. And when the monsoon hits, it’s just non-stop rain, but still pretty warm. There’s no real chill factor, no chilly mornings or freezing evenings, just heat, heat, and more heat. So, imagine my shock when I arrived in Korea and the temperatures plummeted to -10°C! Winters here hit different, and I had to figure out fast how to stay warm without melting from the cold (I wish I could just carry a portable sun with me).
Living in Gangwon-do, known for its colder temperatures and snowstorms, only added to the challenge. Gangwon-do's winters can be colder than a missed text from an ex or a quiet monsoon day with no power. While this year’s winter hasn't been too harsh, there’s always the fear that the cold might come out of nowhere like an uninvited guest. But after a year of living through it (without any frostbite, yay), I’ve learned how to conquer this freezing challenge the best way I know how: armed with winter hacks, cozy vibes, and a tropical attitude, hehe.
So, here’s my ultimate and life-saving survival guide to thriving through Korea's chilly winter months : tropical girl style. Whether you’re dealing with cold winds or a snowstorm, I’ve got the tips that’ll keep you warm, fabulous, and healthy!
Winter Fashion That Warms and Slays
Thermals Are Your Winter BFF
Call me dramatic, but thermal wear is like wrapping your body in the warmest hug ever—and in winter, who doesn’t need that? For anyone braving Korean winters, investing in good-quality thermal wear is an absolute must. Brands like SPAO and Uniqlo’s HEATTECH are lifesavers, offering layers that are lightweight, super cozy, and magically trap heat like nobody’s business. Musinsa, Korea’s online go-to for fashion, also stocks great-quality thermals that will keep you warm without cramping your style.
Coat Game Strong
If you don’t have a padded coat (패딩), are you even in Korea? Think Michelin Man or Kimbab, but chic. Opt for a long, insulated coat in black, beige, or camel tones, and pair it with a pop of color from scarves or hats. Pair your coat with a pop of color from scarves, gloves, or hats to keep things fun and vibrant. Whether it’s a bright red knit scarf or a neon beanie, a splash of color is always amazing !
And here’s the pro tip: invest in one with deep, functional pockets. Not only will they keep your hands warm if you forget your gloves, but they’re also perfect for stashing snacks or tissues (trust me, your nose will thank you). With a padded coat on, you’re ready to blend into the streets of Korea while staying toasty and stylish.
Accessories Are NOT Optional
Heated gloves, fluffy scarves, beanies, and earmuffs all load up! Not only do they scream “main character energy”, but they’ll also block the icy wind that feels like betrayal (ouch) .
Stay Toasty Indoors ( for you, not bread )
Warm It Up, Room...!
If your Korean apartment comes with ondol heating, congratulations! You have the floor is lava experience, but make it warm. Keep windows closed to trap the heat, and lay rugs for extra insulation.

Hot Water Bottles
Not just for grandmas! Fill up a hot water bottle, cuddle it, and you’ll feel like you’re vacationing in a cozy Malaysian jungle hut… kinda.
Heated Mattress
For ultimate warmth during those chilly nights, a heated mattress pad is a must. Trust me, you’ll want to crawl into your bed and be surrounded by warmth from top to bottom. It’s like a personal heat blanket that won’t quit. You’ll sleep like a baby and wake up refreshed, without the “why am I still cold?” struggle.

These mattress pads are especially handy if your room's heating isn’t doing the job or you want to save on energy bills. They’re energy-efficient and offer targeted warmth, meaning you stay cozy without heating the entire room. Plus, they’re perfect for those nights when a thick comforter alone just doesn’t cut it.
