- From Biology to Media Communication: GKS edition.
I sound like a broken record each time I tell this story. However, I chose to share it on K-campus as it might be of actual use to someone who's in a similar boat. If you're looking to switch majors, keep on reading!

I am currently a GKS scholar, doing a Master's in Media Communication and Journalism at Kangwon National University. The thing is, this is actually my second Master's degree! My first was back home in Algeria, in Toxicology. Unfortunately, it took me a good five years and three internships to realize that it wasn't my calling.

I applied to GKS through the embassy track with a new major in mind. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to be in the future, if I'm honest. But, I did know I wanted a career that allows me to experience different things and interact with people in a direct manner. If you're familiar with the GKS application system, you need to choose 3 universities for the embassy track. I chose CNU, SU and KNU while secretly wishing to be accepted into KNU. I chose KNU for a simple reason; healing. I did not research the faculty, the courses or any of the like! I grew up in a bustling city in Algeria called Oran, so I simply wanted to rest in Korea. Yet, I didn't want my location to be too far from Seoul, which made KNU the perfect profile.

I did not fall in love with KNU until I actually started attending it. This university has allowed me to grow my passion in media, further my knowledge in social science and venture into different fields such as social activism, writing and psychology. I truly fell in love with learning at this university. Although, it was a rocky road since my major is 100% in Korean. Adding fuel to the fire, my B.A in Biological Sciences didn't exactly provide any notion of social science or media let alone journalism. Yet, thanks to some professors I met here, I couldn't help but push myself to explore this realm of academia. The professors at KNU were understanding and allowed me to ask the silliest questions in class. I admit that I felt very behind in comparison to other graduate students, but the constant encouragement I received worked wonders on me.
