- Heartwarming extracurricular activity: Volunteering at an Animal Shelter
As an international student in Korea, I embarked on a meaningful journey of volunteer work that left a strong mark on my heart. Back in my country, Brazil, I used to do a lot of volunteer activities so I wanted to keep doing the same here in Korea. It all began when I saw a person tagging the Volunteer Korea Instagram page on a photo when she was doing a volunteer work, entering the page they showcased various volunteering opportunities, mostly in Seoul. Intrigued by the chance to make a positive impact, I signed up for an open opportunity for volunteer day at an animal shelter organized by Ark Animals Right Korea.
On a hot Saturday morning, our group gathered at a subway station in Incheon and set out for a shelter located in a hidden land after crossing small woods with a beautiful river, almost like a forest feeling. This shelter, works as a sanctuary for dogs rescued from meat farms. As we arrived, I was surprised by the big size of these gentle creatures and the desperation for any love in their eyes.
Dividing into teams, we started our tasks for the day, with the focus at improving the living conditions for these deserving animals. My group started by meticulously washing the living area of the dogs, ensuring a clean and comfortable environment while playing with them. After we also cut grass and clearing away debris, transforming the surroundings into a safe area for the shelter's residents.
