Deciding to apply for a master's program abroad is a huge step, and doing it through a scholarship program adds an extra layer of challenge. Nonetheless, in 2023, after years of preparation, I was awarded the GKS scholarship to study at Pusan National University (PNU)—a moment that felt both surreal and deeply rewarding. But getting there wasn’t easy. It took months of research, countless document revisions, a nerve-wracking interview, and a fair share of self-doubt. Looking back, I can say it was one of the most intense yet fulfilling journeys of my life.

Why Pusan National University?

When I started looking at universities in Korea, I knew one thing for sure: I wanted to live in Busan. There was something about the city—its ocean views, dynamic culture, and balance between modern and traditional life—that felt just right for me. Among all the options in Busan, Pusan National University stood out. It is one of the oldest and most respected regional universities in Korea, and beyond that, it has a growing international student community. Unlike many who choose Seoul-based universities, I saw PNU as the perfect place where I could truly picture myself.

To apply to PNU, I began my research on Study in Korea, the official site where the GKS scholarship is announced. However, I quickly realized that wasn’t enough. If I wanted to submit a standout application, I needed to go deeper. That meant spending hours on PNU’s website and my department’s Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) page, researching everything from faculty profiles to course structures. That was the key to understanding what the university looked for in applicants and tailoring my application accordingly.

Building a Strong Application

Applying for a scholarship is highly competitive, and just meeting the minimum requirements usually isn’t enough—I knew I needed to stand out. Of course, I submitted the Personal Statement, Study Plan, university diploma, and other required documents, but I also made sure to include additional materials that showcased my commitment and qualifications.

I sent in my TOEFL and TOPIK scores to prove my language proficiency, along with certifications of work experience, volunteer activities, and cultural courses related to Korea. I even included extra academic certifications beyond my undergraduate degree to demonstrate my dedication to continuous learning.

One thing I learned during this process? Attention to detail is everything. Even a small mistake in formatting or a missing document could mean disqualification. Besides triple-checking every requirement from the GSIS website to ensure my application was perfect before submitting it, I also paid attention to small details—like making sure the colors I used for the package matched the university’s official colors.

The Toughest Challenge

Out of everything, the interview was by far the most nerve-wracking part. Unlike the essays, where I could take my time to refine my responses, the interview required me to think on my feet and articulate my thoughts clearly under pressure. The biggest challenge? I had no idea what to expect.

To prepare, I scoured YouTube and social media for experiences from past GKS applicants, even if they had applied to different universities. I also practiced my answers to every possible question with friends and colleagues, treating each session like a real interview. Since it wasn’t in my native language, I wanted to ensure I could express myself confidently, even if nerves tried to get the best of me.
